Two senior Iranian clerics have criticized Saudi officials for clashes, which left at least three Shias killed in the holy city of Medina.
In two separate statements, Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi and Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani denounced the Monday attacks on Shia pilgrims outside the Baqi cemetery.
Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi said in a Wednesday statement that Muslims were obliged to “seriously pursue the matter through diplomatic ways to prevent extremist practices by a certain radical religious minority that does whatever it wants at Muslim's sacred cites.”
Ayatollah Safi Golpaygani also called on the Saudi government to 'secure the safety of pilgrims', condemning the recent attack on Shias as 'brutal' and 'aggressive'.
Saudi security forces and religious police reportedly clashed with female pilgrims who gathered in front of the Baqi cemetery to mark the anniversary of the Prophet's passing away on Monday evening.
Informed sources confirmed that three pilgrims were killed and several others wounded in the clashes. The victims were from Qatif and al-Ahsa, two Shia regions in eastern Saudi Arabia.
Saudi officials denied the reports of casualty on Tuesday but said they have arrested and questioned nine people over the row.
Saudi Arabia practices Wahhabism, an extremely intolerant interpretation of Islam. Because of the pressure exerted by Wahabi clerics women are not allowed to drive, vote or even visit graves in the Kingdom.
Based on reports by right groups, the Saudi government also systematically suppresses its Shia minority - which it considers as heretics - mostly living in the eastern oil-rich regions of the country.(presstv)
